Paris life science partnering event is biggest ever

March 23, 2015 Erin Righetti

There were two things you could see in Paris the week of March 9 from everywhere you went: The Eiffel Tower and BIO-Europe Spring® 2015 delegates!

Nearly 2,400 executive life science dealmakers came to Paris March 9–11 for Europe’s largest springtime partnering event, a 15% increase in attendance over 2014. Notably, licensing opportunities presented from the 1,369 companies in attendance were up by 26% at 2,672.

What this means is that the search for innovation, and for funding partners to enable innovation to thrive, is still very high. Investors are in search of novel R&D, translational medicine, rare diseases, and biologics in addition to new frontiers like stem cell therapies. Biotech continues to improve the lives of patients by improving the efficacy of drugs already on the market, and working toward both companion therapeutics and new novel treatments and cures. Pharma has adjusted their partnering approach to include flexible business models and financing. You know this.

But why did nearly 2,400 extremely busy and powerful executives in the life sciences converge upon Paris for three high-energy days of meetings? Relationships. Personal connections still rule the roost in advancing healthcare in the US, Europe and elsewhere. Delegates at BIO-Europe Spring engaged in more one-on-one partnering meetings over the course of three intensive days than they could over many months of traveling for meetings the traditional way. Many delegates stated that they enjoy coming to BIO-Europe Spring because there is no better barometer to measure a relationship than a simple handshake.0803_(c)schedl_bioeurope2015
